Science and higher education policy, engineering education and the 'Maschinenhaus' initiative
The mechanical and plant engineering sector is – with 193,000 engineers – the largest engineering employer in Germany. Mechanical engineering companies and universities work closely together in eight research associations and in more than 450 research projects within the Industrielle Gemeinschaftsforschung (IGF) . Mechanical engineering companies invest over 5 billion euros annually in research and development. That's why the mechanical engineering industry is also the innovation engine of the German economy. The design of the academic and higher education system, close cooperation between companies and universities, and a quality-assured engineering education of as many young people as possible are therefore essential topics for the mechanical and plant engineering industry.
